Mannum is a town on the lower South Australian section of the Murray River.

This area can produce callop, cod, redfin and yabbies, but there is usually better fishing to be had at locations further upstream.

The riverbanks from Walkers Flat downstream have historically been infested by the introduced willow tree.

There has been good fishing had by boat among the willows, mainly when the trees have full foliage in summer.

But where there are willows, bank access is restricted.

Mannum has good boat launching facilities.

If buying a shrimp trap or yabby pot, be sure it complies with SA rules here.

For bait, earthworms work well, but you can’t beat locally caught live shrimp.

The Murray River around Walker Flat and the town of Nildotte produces some good fish.

Walker Flat is just over 100km from Adelaide, upstream from Purnong.

This is an area people tend to stop on the way to other regions along the river.

There are two free camping spots at Walker Flat that offer landbased fishing and boat launching in pleasant surroundings.

The camps are Swamp Hen Reserve and Hettner Landing.

Several Swamp Hen Reserve campsites have river access, some sites have a beach.

There is a toilet, barbecue and picnic tables.

Hettner Landing has fire pits and grassed areas next to the river with a picnic table and barbecue near the launch site, as well as toilets and a nearby store.

The river through here produces some big callop.

Local lagoons along the river produce bag limits of yabbies, especially during summer after a flood, on a falling river.

Carp are almost always present and fun to catch on light tackle.

For bait, earthworms work well, but you can’t beat locally caught live shrimp.

Callop will take a variety of small lures.

Cod are always a chance.

Swan Reach is a great Murray River fishing spot for Adelaide day-trippers.

It has good boat launching facilities.

While Swan Reach is an easy day-trip this section of the river is scenic enough to justify an extended boating holiday.

Fishing at Swan Reach can be productive for callop, carp and yabbies, with the area upstream producing the best fishing.

Cod are always a chance.

For bait, earthworms work well, but you can’t beat locally caught live shrimp.
