Hastings Point fishing is centred around the headland and surf beaches.
The headland is a reasonable fishing platform with some access to deep water.
Schools of mulloway are often in close among the gutters in the rocks.
As with any ocean-facing rock platform, caution is required when fishing.
The rocks produce mainly yellowfin bream, with a good chance of tailor.
Tidal Cudgera Creek produces flathead, bream, mangrove jacks and luderick.
Use lures to get past the small bream.
Mulloway are a chance at the creek mouth after prolonged heavy rain.
Beach fishing at Hastings Point can be problematic in summer because of holiday swimmers and surfers.
Surf fishing south of Hastings Point is very good, and the road through to Pottsville follows the beach so it is easy enough to stop along the way and look for gutters.
Bream, tarwhine, tailor, dart, flathead and mulloway can be caught in the surf throughout this area.
The tailor season is June to February, with bigger fish caught in summer but usually in lesser numbers than early in the season.
Night fishing often produces the best tailor, and also mulloway.
Shallow Mooball Creek, between Hastings Point and Pottsville, has flathead.
South of Pottsville is a beach near a rock patch “Black Rocks” – this area produces big tailor.
To the north of Hastings Point is Cabarita (Norries Head), arguably a better rock fishing destination, but it requires more effort to fish, and is less safe.
Beaches in this region have cockles (pipis) and beach worms.
Pottsville and Kingscliff (to the north) both have fishable creeks.
A tip for winter surf fishing is to wear waders for warmth.
