By former Murray River fisheries officer TREVOR SIMMONDS
The Murray River around Walker Flat and the town of Nildotte produces some good fish.
Walker Flat is just over 100km from Adelaide, upstream from Purnong.
This is an area people tend to stop on the way to other regions along the river.
There are two free camping spots at Walker Flat that offer landbased fishing and boat launching in pleasant surroundings.
The camps are Swamp Hen Reserve and Hettner Landing.
Several Swamp Hen Reserve campsites have river access, some sites have a beach.
There is a toilet, barbecue and picnic tables.
Hettner Landing has fire pits and grassed areas next to the river with a picnic table and barbecue near the launch site, as well as toilets and a nearby store.
The river through here produces some big callop.
Local lagoons along the river produce bag limits of yabbies, especially during summer after a flood, on a falling river.
Carp are almost always present and fun to catch on light tackle.
For bait, earthworms work well, but you can’t beat locally caught live shrimp.
Callop will take a variety of small lures.
Cod are always a chance.
If buying a shrimp trap or yabby pot, be sure it complies with SA rules here.
