South Australian Fishing Reports

SA fish kill continues

WFS Admin

Sadly, toxic algae is continuing to kill fish along South Australia’s coast into May.

Sea life has died in both gulfs, in the south-east and along Kangaroo Island.

The following website is the best I’ve found that shows the diversity of sea life affected (WARNING: it’s grim) … https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/sa-marine-mortality-events-2025

The blooms are blamed on karenia mikimotoi and karenia brevia species of dinoflagellates.

Unfortunately, on social media some people are going for conspiracy theories, such as passing Chinese ships being responsible.

The calm, warm water event leading up to the blooms was well recorded, see our earlier post.

Calm, warm water exists in many places so there must be other contributing factors.

Of note is the massive 2022/23 Murray River flood which dumped millions of tonnes of nutrient rich water across the SA coast.

Discussion about the Adelaide desalination plants may be relevant, as there are known links to saline stratification and algal blooms. Fish farms and septic outlets also add nutrients. However the bloom appeared to start far from the plant outlets and fish farms.

It remains to be seen how long it will take for the bloom to dissipate and for fish to recover.

Karenia blooms are known to be long lasting at times.

Globally, the first bad karenia bloom widely reported, as far as I can tell from online searching, was in 1946 in the Gulf of Mexico.

There is evidence that karenia blooms may be occuring more often in recent times.

Fish kill on South Australian beaches

SA fishos will be concerned by a recent event where sea life died as a weird foam washed up on shore … story here.

Interestingly, this follows an extended hot water anomaly in the area, pic attached. Image adapted from www.climatereanalyzer.org.

The hot water anomaly was around Tasmania too, where they had the largest recorded die-off of farmed Atlantic salmon near the Huon (southern region). New Zealand was also affected.

There was also a fish kill off the Pilbara at Gnoorea a few weeks before, with a similar hot water anomaly.

FOOTNOTE: WFS visited Adelaide for a week around April 20, the bloom was continuing at this time and extended with dead fish and seals reported on Yorke Peninsula, Kangaroo Island and close to Adelaide. Also dead kangaroos off one of the affected beaches, but this was blamed on canaris grass. South Australia also had a big marine fish kill in 2013 … https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/marine-science/articles/10.3389/fmars.2019.00610/full
