Glenlyon Dam is a medium-sized impoundment covering 1800ha when full.

It is located 31km from Texas township and about 90km from Stanthorpe.

The lake has an average depth of just 4.3m.

Yellowbelly are arguably the main target here, but the prospect of catching big murray cod attracts many fishermen.

Glenlyon has also been stocked with silver perch, and there are native eel-tailed catfish and spangled perch.

There are large areas of timber that hold fish, particularly in the upper reaches of the creeks.

The timber is thickest at the northern end, which is usually a reliable area.

The area in front of the limestone caves is popular, try fishing where the large trees are in front of the rocks.

Further up and around the corner from the caves, on the west side, are steep rock banks, a good area for trolling.

Further up again is a water tank on the west bank near where there is submerged timber which often holds fish.

About 2km up from the tank, on the east side is a bay with weedbeds and standing timber, when the depth at the base of the trees is 3m to 6m (about 20 per cent capacity) this spot can fish well.

The lake does at times suffer from low levels and weed growth, but fish are usually still caught. Check local conditions before fishing.

Glenlyon Dam Tourist Park (02) 6737 5266 has toilets, showers, barbecues, boat hire, phones, tennis court and playground.

The kiosk has bait, tackle, ice, gas and petrol.
