Pindari Dam, New South Wales

Pindari Dam is on the Severn River in New South Wales’ far north, about 60km from Inverell and 20km from Ashford.

The dam, built in 1969, created the first big water storage in northern New South Wales.

The impoundment has a full capacity half the size of Sydney Harbour, with an impressive maximum depth of 85m.

Water levels and water conditions fluctuate and it pays to check these before planning a fishing trip.

Pindari is a noted cod water, with many big fish caught over the years.

However the dam suffered greatly in the drought of 2019, falling to just 3 per cent.

Being located in rugged country there is much good structure and steep drop-offs.

As well as big cod there are yellowbelly, silver perch, redfin and eel-tailed catfish.

Cod can be caught all year, with yellowbelly and redfin best in spring and summer.

Surface fishing for cod – often deemed a summer activity – can be good in winter, with fish feeding up against the banks.

Below the dam the river has cod fishing in rugged gorges, but public bankside access is limited – most fishos use Jimagie and Ashford about 20km below the dam as access points.

The dam has some rocky navigation hazards, especially at low water levels.

Pindari visitors can also go picnicking, walking, sailing, swimming and waterskiing in the scenic surroundings.

There are good boat ramps on Richard Tighe Scenic Drive, and barbecues, bush sheds, tables and an amenities block.

This region gets cold and the weather can change fast so prepare accordingly.
