Lake Boondooma is on the Boyne River, about 25km from Proston and 70km from Kingaroy, in the South Burnett region.
The dam was built in 1983, creating an impoundment of 2000ha when full. The average depth is 11m.
Boondooma is stocked with bass, yellowbelly, silver perch and saratoga.
In 2017/18, 82,000 bass and 111,000 golden perch were stocked, for a total of 1,425,500 bass, 1,340,800 yellowbelly and 92,000 silver perch over the years.
In 1994, almost 70,000 barramundi were released, but few were recaptured.
Boondooma is one of the few locations where both murray cod and mary river cod have been stocked.
Eel-tail catfish, tilapia, redclaw crayfish and spangled perch are also available.
The lake is best known for bass and yellowbelly.
This location offers a mix of good fishing and scenery, with rocky headlands and gullies.
The lake has mostly bare banks, but there is some good timber in deeper water that is accessible by boat.
Anglers target shallow weedbeds along the shores in the bays, and the few timbered areas.
As with most bass and yellowbelly dams, small lures worked slowly get good results.
Bass schools can be found over structure such as channels (old creek beds), drop-offs, the tops of submerged hills, and over flats.
Bass reliably form schools in winter and spring.
As in all impoundments, good sounders are useful to find fish and bait.
Each February the Family Yellowbelly Fishing Competition is held at Boondooma.
Boondooma also hosts Bass Australia Nation, ABT and Basstastic competitions.
There are no restrictions on boat type.
Accommodation is available though Lake Boondooma Caravan and Recreation Park, with cabins, powered and unpowered sites and a bunkhouse.
Campfires are allowed in some areas. There are barbeques, picnic tables, toilets and playgrounds.
