Lakes Samsonvale and Kurwongbah are located west of Petrie, near Brisbane.

The Samsonvale dam was built in 1976 on the North Pine River, and the impoundment covers 2200ha when full, with an average depth of 10m.

Much of the lake is shallow, with weed.

The first fish stocking took place in 1991.

Bass, yellowbelly, mary river cod and saratoga are the stocked species.

There are also tilapia, spangled perch and redclaw.

For years only landbased fishing was allowed from limited areas such as Bullocky Rest and McGavins View.

When boat anglers finally entered the lake on a limited entry permit system they found big bass and yellowbelly, well fed from the abundant bony bream, as well as snub-nosed gar.

In 2018/19 there were 58,000 bass, 22,000 yellowbelly, 1000 cod and 27 adult saratoga stocked.

The much smaller Lake Kurwongbah is stocked with the same species.

It covers 367ha, with fishing restricted to two areas, the Mick Hanfling Park on Beeville Rd (picnic shelters, electric barbecues, toilets) and Kurwongbah Park, located on Dayboro Rd (shelter with picnic tables and wood-fired barbecues).

Canoes are allowed within a designated area.

Saratoga are a popular target in Kurwongbah.

Nearby little Lake Gaffney is a closed educational fishery.
